Darwin D. Martin House

The Darwin D. Martin House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright between 1903 and 1905, is a premier example of his Prairie School style. Located in Buffalo, New York, this National Historic Landmark spans a 1.5-acre complex, including the main house, pergola, conservatory, carriage house, and gardener’s cottage. Restored over decades, it features over 400 art glass windows, custom furnishings, and seamless integration with its landscape, embodying Wright’s vision of organic architecture.

History & Significance

Commissioned by Darwin D. Martin, a wealthy Buffalo businessman, this complex is one of Wright’s most ambitious residential projects. Built at a cost of $175,000 (equivalent to over $5 million today), it reflects the close collaboration between client and architect. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986, the Martin House underwent a $50 million restoration completed in phases through 2019, preserving its legacy as a cornerstone of 20th-century design.
